How to Make Spiderweb Cookies (Video)
Learn how to make a simple spiderweb cookie with a spooky, fuzzy-looking black spider! These dark chocolate cookies are easy to make and so much fun. Watch my quick video tutorial, and soon you’ll be whipping up these party-perfect Halloween treats like a pro!
I can’t believe it’s already Halloween week! Once again it’s snuck right up on me.
Well, I have been pretty busy, so you can’t really blame me too much, right? And I did share those Caramel Apples a couple weeks ago, so I haven’t been completely oblivious!
I was traveling all weekend; so proud and honored to be a guest at the Kohler Food and Wine Experience, at The American Club in Kohler, Wisconsin. Did you follow along? It’s not too late to check out my Twitter feed and catch up. You can also search the hashtags #KohlerFoodWine #DestinationKohler to see ALL the tweets from all the attendees as well as the hosts.
It was marvelous… but there was just a teensy-weensy piece of me that was sorta excited to get home so I could finish up these Halloween treats.
These are going to be toppers for my two favorite kinds of cupcakes, chocolate and vanilla, stuck right on top with a little swirl of buttercream. I can’t wait to bring them to my kids’ class parties later this week.
The cookies look fancy but they’re really not hard at all. They start with THE BEST chocolate cut-out cookie recipe. I’m telling you, THE BEST! These things do not spread in the oven AT ALL. They hold their shape beautifully, and the dough is a dream to work with. Plus they taste amazing. I used dark cocoa, so they’re really almost black, and the flavor is just as deep. I like them a little less sweet, because it all gets balanced out when you pipe on the sugar-y royal icing.
So, this past weekend was the first of three almost back-to-back trips, and things were pretty stressful for a while there. Just trying to make all the preparations and stuff. I saved this post for last, because for me, sitting at a table decorating cookies is almost like a reward. I enjoy that time so much and I just get into a zone. It’s so relaxing and such a great way to unwind. If you’ve got a little free time and you just want to lose yourself in it, definitely give these cookies a try. I’ve got a quick little video below that breaks it all down, easy-peasy.
I hope you enjoy watching it as much as I liked making it! If you dig videos like this, you can view all my work here, or subscribe to my YouTube channel here. And be sure to check out this page for all my most favorite Halloween recipes!

- Roll the cookie dough out to a thickness of 1/8-inch, and cut into shapes using a spiderweb cutter.

- Thin the royal icing with a few drops of water, if necessary.

How do you keep the black icing from bleeding color into the white? I’ve made snowmen and the eyes/buttons always become “fuzzy”.
That can be tricky. Here are my best tips:
Hope this is helpful!
