Hot Buttered Jamie
Warm up with a hot buttered Jamie! This buttery hot toddy is made with brown sugar, Irish whiskey, and strongly brewed black tea. It’s perfect for a cold winter nights!
As I am typing this, there is what truly looks like a Currier and Ives picture going on right outside my window. You know what? I’m snapping a pic, you guys just have to see it.
Never have I felt more blessed to be able to work from home. It’s sooo pretty to look at but I’m sure glad I don’t have to be out in it.
On the flip side, my kids are home from school all day. Again. They were also off all day yesterday, for Act 180 Day or whatever it is. I love my kids somethin’ fierce, but lordy. They need to be in school. They are at each other’s throats, and on my last nerve, by noon. I need a cocktail!
Or better yet, a hot toddy.
I have loved this one for years. Ever since I first started spending my St. Paddy’s days at that pub I was telling you about in my last post. It’s perfect because it’s creamy and comforting, a little sweet and cinnamon-y, with a boozy kick from real Irish whiskey plus a bit of a caffeine buzz. Everything you could ever want in a winter drink and then some.
It starts with soft butter, mashed together with brown sugar and some freshly grated nutmeg. If you don’t have whole nutmeg on hand, you can certainly use a pinch of the pre-ground stuff, but once you’ve tried grating it yourself I promise you will never go back. The flavor is amazing and it’s so easy to just scratch it in with a microplane grater.
Next comes a shot of Irish whiskey, and then you pour over some steaming hot water and steep some tea. My favorite tea blend, around St. Patrick’s day and always, is Irish breakfast. It has such a deep, rich flavor. I can’t not have coffee in the morning, but when I need an afternoon pick-me-up, I’m all about the Irish breakfast tea.
Top it with whipped cream, a few more scratches of nutmeg, and a cinnamon stick, and you are in heaven.
It doesn’t get much better than a mug of hot buttered Jamie between your palms and a beautiful snowy scene outside your window! Unless of course your kids are playing at a friend’s house. 😛

Thank you for the original take on a great drink. But I’m missing what the difference is from a Hot Toddy. Is it the Irish Breakfast tea? I think I’ll try it with Chai, instead.
There are all sorts of ways you can do a hot toddy! This is definitely one of them. They can be done with any kind of liquor, and any number of other add-ins. I like this one because of the butter and the tea. I think it would be fantastic with Chai as well. Thanks so much for stopping by, Chris!
I feel compelled to note that the inventor of this drink, former Brittinghams bartender Jamie McNutt passed away in June of this year at the young age of 42. In addition to being a fantastic bartender he was a dear friend to many, I’m happy this recipe is one of his many legacies. Please raise your glass in honor of the originator the next time you make one!
That is so sad, really??? Oh my goodness I had no idea. I hope he’s happy with my take on his creation. Thanks so much for reading, and for sharing this with me and my readers. <3
I love a hot toddy but this version sounds even better than what I usually make (with the butter and the tea and the nutmeg, YUM!) By the way, I’ve found that hot toddys are an excellent way to stave off the common cold, I make one immediately when I feel a sore throat coming on (and I don’t care if that’s at 10 in the morning ;)).
I am definitely going to remember this the next time I get that scratchy feeling in the back of my throat, Nicole! I think I would enjoy a hot toddy a LOT more than a tall, cold glass of Emergen-C, lol! Thanks so much for stopping by!
Love this!! Of course we don’t get snow here in FL (and only hit freezing one time this season – which will stink for mosquitos) but I can pretend to have a little snow scene and have one of these bad boys, right?? Pinned!
Oh yes! Pretend away. This drink will transport you, haha! Thanks so much Claire!
I have no idea what a Hot Toddy is. I am totally confused – how I have never heard of this type of drink before? I feel like I live on another planet! And yet, reading the recipe I do not understand how I have not seen something like this before, it is obvious it is totally addictive! 🙂
Haha that is so funny Nagi! Do they really not have hot toddies in Australia? That’s so hard to imagine! A hot toddy is just any kind of boozy cocktail that’s served hot. This is one of my absolute favorites- especially at this time of year. Thank you so much for the sweet comment my friend!
Oh my gosh! Look at all that snow! At least you have this awesome drink to keep you warm! Great St. Patty’s drink!
I know, right Kathleen? Just when I thought Spring was around the corner, we ended up getting slammed! Oh well, it sure was pretty and the good news is- it’s almost all melted already. And the drink definitely softened the blow! Thanks so much for the sweet comment Kathleen! Hope you had safe travels on your fabulous European vacation!
The view from your window looks beautiful Allie, but I’m so done with snow for this year 🙂 Hope it is starting to warm up this week, so there are no more snow days for the kids! This hot buttered Jamie looks so good! Perfect for a snowy day! And pictures are awesome!
I’m hoping those were the last snow days of the year, lol! I don’t mind a snow day here or there, but when they back up to a teacher in-service day AND a weekend, things get a bit squirrelly around here! Thank goodness it is finally warming up and I think the snow will all be gone by week’s end. Thank you so much for the sweet compliments Mira! I hope you’re having a great week dear!
This sounds so comforting and delicious! 😀 Lovely warming recipe perfect for chilly days! x
Thank you so much Jess! That is just what I thought too 😉
It really does look like Currier and Ives out your window. 🙂 I’ve always loved hot buttered rum, but I think I’d like this even more – like a boozy chai. Love love this, Allie.
Thanks Marissa! It really is like a boozy chai! You are so right 😉
