Bake up a batch of sweet pear dumplings this season! A soft, juicy pear is encased in tender pastry and braised in a sweet cinnamon sauce.

  1. Place the sugar, water, butter, and cinnamon in a small pot.

  2. Cook over medium-low heat for about 5 minutes, or until the sugar has dissolved and the sauce has thickened slightly.

  3. Set aside and allow to cool.
For the dumplings
  1. Place the flour, baking powder, and salt in a large mixing bowl, and stir to combine.

  2. Add the butter and process until the mixture resembles coarse meal.
  3. Drizzle in the milk, while processing, until the dough gathers itself into a ball.
  4. Divide the dough equally into 6 portions.
  5. Roll out to a thickness of 1/8″.
  6. Fill the cavity of the pear with soft butter.
  7. Place the pear in the center of the dough, and sprinkle with about a half teaspoon of sugar and a pinch of cinnamon.
  8. Gather the dough up and around the sides of the pear, pressing and molding it to the shape of the fruit. Form a stem and leaf from dough scraps.
  9. Place the dumplings in a casserole dish.

  10. Cover with the reserved sauce, and bake for 35 minutes at 375°F. Cool slightly; serve warm.
