These magical dessert bars are indulgent and incredibly simple to make! It’s as easy as pressing a graham cracker crust into a baking pan and then layering on the six remaining ingredients and baking.

The sweetened condensed milk caramelizes as it bakes melding together the flavors and textures of the layers. So whether you call them 7 layer bars, dream bars, hello Dolly bars or just pure magic, they are sure to become a favorite. Perfect for sharing at holidays or for parties!

Preheat the oven to 325°F and line a 9×13 pan with parchment paper.

Step 1: Combine melted butter, kosher salt and graham cracker crumbs in a bowl and mix until fully combined.  Then press into the bottom of your prepared pan.

Step 2: Sprinkle the chocolate chips and butterscotch chips over the graham cracker crust.

Step 3: Then sprinkle the coconut over the chocolate and butterscotch chips.

Step 4: Now sprinkle the pecans over the coconut.

Step 5: Drizzle the sweetened condensed milk over the top of the entire surface, doing your best to get an even layer without pooling the condensed milk anywhere.  If desired, top with a few additional chocolate and butterscotch chips, lightly pressing them into the sweetened condensed milk.

Step 6: Bake in the preheated oven until the edges are just beginning to lightly brown, about 25-30 minutes.  Remove from the oven and allow to cool completely before slicing and serving.

I highly suggest using parchment paper to line your baking pan. The sweetened condensed milk will cool and stick to the bars to the pan without a layer of parchment paper.

Make sure the 7-layer bars are completely cool before slicing. Use a sharp knife and wipe it clean between each cut for the prettiest bars.

Can I use walnuts instead of pecans?

Yes! Walnuts, peanuts, almonds or cashews can be substituted.

Can I freeze magic bars?

Yes! They can be frozen for up to 3 months in an airtight container.

Notes

Mini chocolate chips can be replaced with regular size chocolate chips in any flavor you desire.  Milk, dark, white or peanut butter would all be delicious!
Pecans can be replaced with walnuts, almonds, peanuts or cashews.
7 layer bars can be stored in an airtight container at room temperature for up to 5 days or in the refrigerator for up to one week.  They also freeze well for up to 3 months.
