So? How was your Christmas?
Mine was nuts! On Tuesday afternoon, I packed up a few dozen cupcakes and headed over to my kids’ class Winter socials. From that point on, it was a non-stop s**t-show straight through until Friday, at which time I essentially dug myself a hole, crawled into it, and hid for two straight days. 😛
All in all I’d say it was a huge success, in spite of the absolutely abhorrent behavior of one of my children (not naming names). He’s lucky he’s so stinkin’ cute, is all I can say. I am hunkering down for the week ahead; school doesn’t start back up until the fifth. So I am writing to you from the filthy, noisy, yet somehow relatively peaceful oasis of a McDonald’s indoor playground, while my kiddos let off some built-up steam.
Let’s talk about the New Year! Do you have any resolutions or goals set? I have been pondering mine since Thanksgiving. It’s pretty simple, but at the same time I think it could end up be kinda challenging, since it basically involves every aspect of my life, lol.
I had considered leaving off the last sentence of that quote, for fear it might sound a little depressing. But I really don’t think that it has to be. It’s true- life is so short. I blinked my eyes and found myself married with two crazy kids. I’ll blink again and they’ll be grown and off on their own. Another blink and I’ll be even older and grayer, and then what? So for me, for 2015, I want to do my best enjoy every possible minute of this precious life.
When I’m working, I want to be fully immersed in it, inspired, and fulfilled by it. When I’m with my family, I want to appreciate every mischievous grin, every juicy-lipped kiss, every soft flushed cheek and every sweet snuggle. When I’m at rest, I want to look around at the home I’ve created, and feel perfectly relaxed and at peace.
And when I pause for a meal, I want every morsel to be as fresh, delicious, and satisfying as it can possibly be.
My yeast-phobia has been well documented here, but I refuse to continue living in fear. I discovered the recipe for these pillowy-sweet and yeasty bowknots in the new Better Homes and Gardens New Cookbook, 16th Edition. They were originally Orange Bowknots, but I decided to kill two birds by also overcoming my grapefruit aversion. Other than that simple substitution, I followed the recipe to the letter and the result was nothing short of a revelation.
My wish is for your 2015 to be filled to the brim with blissfully delicious moments!
To that end, I have teamed up with Better Homes & Gardens and Houghton Mifflin Harcourt, to offer one lucky reader a copy of their newest Red Plaid Cookbook. Grapefruit Bowknots
Ingredients
For the Knot Rolls
- 6 1/2 cups (812.5 g) all-purpose flour,, divided (you may not need all the flour)
- 1/4 ounce (7.09 g) active dry yeast, (1 packet)
- 1 1/4 cups (295.74 ml) milk, (I used 1%)
- 1/2 cup (113.5 g) unsalted butter
- 1/3 cup (66.67 g) granulated sugar
- 1/2 teaspoon kosher salt
- 2 eggs,, large
- 2 tablespoons finely shredded grapefruit zest
- 1/4 cup (59.15 ml) freshly squeezed grapefruit juice
For the Glaze
- 1 1/2 cups (180 g) powdered sugar
- 1 1/2 teaspoons finely shredded grapefruit zest
- 2-3 tablespoons freshly squeezed grapefruit juice
Instructions
To Make the Knot Rolls:
- In a large mixing bowl, combine 2 cups of the flour and the yest; set aside.
- In a medium saucepan, heat and stir the milk, butter, granulated sugar, and salt just until warm (120-130 degrees F) and butter almost melts; add to flour mixture along with eggs.
- Beat on low speed for 30 seconds, scraping the sides of the bowl. Beat on high speed for 3 minutes.
- Stir in grapefruit zest, grapefruit juice, and as much of the remaining flour as you can.
- Turn dough out onto a lightly floured surface. Knead in enough of the remaining flour to make a moderately soft dough that is smooth and elastic (3-5 minutes total). Shape dough into a ball.
- Place in a lightly oiled bowl, turning to oil surface of dough. Cover; let rise in a warm place until double in size (about 1 hour).
- Punch dough down. Turn out onto a lightly floured surface. Divide in half. Cover and let rest 10 minutes.
- Lightly grease two large baking sheets, set aside.
- Roll each dough half into a 12x7-inch rectangle. Cut each rectangle into twelve 7-inch long strips.
- Tie each strip loosely in a knot. Place knots 2 inches apart on prepared baking sheets. Cover; let rise in a warm place until nearly double in size (about 30 minutes).
- Preheat oven to 375 degrees F. Bake for 12-14 minutes or until golden.
- Immediately remove from baking sheets. Cool on wire racks.
- Drizzle with glaze.
To Make the Glaze:
- In a medium bowl combine the powdered sugar, grapefruit zest, and enough grapefruit juice to reach drizzling consistency.
I made them and they turned out delicious. Thank you for the recipe, we loved them.
So happy you liked them Irina! Thanks so much for the great feedback!
I can’t believe you’ve ever had an aversion to anything baking wise! 😉 That single shot of the pink grapefruit is making me drool as much as these bow knots. I LOVE grapefruit. Definitely need to try these. Great post… Happy New Year!!
Don’t you just love that color??? I felt so inspired by it 😉 Thanks Jill!
I love that quote! Almost as much as these knots 😉 And winning the giveaway!! He he!!
Thank you Nagi! And good luck! xoxo
What a wonderful quote (even the semi-depressing reality check at the end) and a wonderful goal! I hope to do the same – it’s not my strength but I am trying!
Same here Nora! I keep having to remind myself- old habits die hard! Good luck to you; I hope you have a fabulous new year 😀
Love the quote! I’ve never heard it before. Great idea to bake with grapefruit- it’s not the first fruit you think of to use. These look amazing, and the little knots are adorable.
You’re right- it’s not but I really love the fresh and bright flavor. Thank you so much Sherri!
Happy 2015, Allie! These look freaking amazing, and pink grapefruit has always been my favourite. In fact, I remember having a grapefruit half each day on holiday.
Pity I can’t enter the giveaway though. Can’t wait to see what you come up with this new year.
Thank you so much Lisa and same here! I always drool over all your recipes so I can’t wait to see what you have up your sleeve for 2015! xoxo
Happy New Year, Allie! What a wonderful post. I just love that quote … yup, even with the last sentence left in. That’s such a great philosophy to adhere to at the beginning of a brand new year … live every moment well.
I’m going to keep that in mind over this coming week.
Love the bow-tie breads, too. As usual they are original and creative and, of course, beautifully photographed.
Aw thank you Helen! You are just the sweetest. Hope you enjoyed the holidays and hope your year is off to a roaring start! xoxo
I love the Hemingway quote, Allie. And I’m glad you kept the last line in because it’s true, dammit. During a particularly dark, depressed time of my life, I commented to my coworker, “I don’t want to die, look back on my life, and see that all I’d done was work and clean my house.” That was literally all I was doing and I was miserable. My resolution for this year is to start making changes. There are so many things that I do that I hate and I don’t know why I continue doing them. I need to realize that no one is going to make me happy or give me the things I want. I need to work for them. I need to take action. Thank you for this lovely post and the reminder that if we let it, life will pass us by. And girl, there’s no reason for your yeast aversion because these grapefruit knots are making my mouth water. They look insanely pillowy soft and delicious! Happy New Year to you and your family!
Happy New Year to you too my dear and thank you so much for this! You just summed up all my feelings from the last year- all I did was work and yell at my kids and clean. Boo! Here’s to doing what we love and going for it! Hugs to you Nancy 😀 😀 😀
They’re simply gorgeous! Hope you had wonderful time over the holidays! It surely does pass by quickly.
I want my new year to be PURPOSEFUL. That’s my goal. Purposeful in my work. Purposeful in my marriage. Purposeful as a mother. Not just doing to get by but doing it with passion and planning and determination.
Many blessings to you and your family!
I’ve been trying to enjoy my moments with the kiddos too instead of blogging. They go back on the 5th as well.
That is such a great goal for 2015! That is a lot of what I want too. To just take a little extra time and thought and care. Thank you so much for sharing Melanie and I hope you enjoy the last few days of the winter break with your family! xoxo
Reading this post of yours made me feel incredibly peaceful Allie!!!!!! I love that quote you’ve put up and how we just forget to actually LIVE and simply survive when life gets tough! I wish you ALLLLLLL the happiness and love for 2015 and for many many MANYYYY more years to come! :* :* :* These bowknots look SUPER cute and i’m loving the grapefruit flavor!!!!
Aw, thank you so much Samina! I’m so happy you felt a sense of peace, that truly warms my heart. Wishing you many blessings, love and happiness and success and prosperity in the coming year! Big hugs to you my sweet friend! 🙂
Looks absolutely amazing, and what gorgeous writing! Congratulations on a fantastic year, and best wishes for a wonderful 2015 filled with lots of delicious food!

These bowknots look so amazing and super scrumptious, Allie! Love the fresh grapefruit, so delicious! Happy New Year lovely! X
Thank you so much Jess! I hope you had a fun holiday and wishing you all the best in 2015 🙂
Yeast makes the best desserts! I so enjoy working with the dough. This combines two of my all time favorite things, grapefruits and yeasted knots! And they’re stunning! Gosh can I just hug my screen?? These sound even better after all the rich desserts we’ve had – citrus is a welcome change!
I totally agree! Even though it’s still butter and sugar and carby-carbs all over the place, there’s still something so bright and uplifting about citrus right now, lol! So happy you enjoyed Mary Frances! Thank you so much for the great feedback and for the encouragement with yeast. You’re right it can really be fun; I don’t know what I’ve been so afraid of!
I adore grapefruit so this is right up my alley! And I totally agree! Life just goes so very fast!
Yay! So happy you enjoyed, Annie! Thanks for the sweet comment 🙂
These would taste so great for breakfast Allie. I wish you all the success, health, and blessings that 2015 will bring. Happy 2015
Thank you so much Chineka- and to you too! Hope you are feeling well sweetie 🙂
I love that quote! The recipe is going on my to do list for sure! Happy New Year!
Isn’t it a good one? I found it months ago and I reflect upon it often. So glad you enjoyed the recipe Lyubomira, and Happy New Year to you as well! 😀
