Hot Buttered Jamie
Warm up with a hot buttered Jamie! This buttery hot toddy is made with brown sugar, Irish whiskey, and strongly brewed black tea. It’s perfect for a cold winter nights!
As I am typing this, there is what truly looks like a Currier and Ives picture going on right outside my window. You know what? I’m snapping a pic, you guys just have to see it.
Never have I felt more blessed to be able to work from home. It’s sooo pretty to look at but I’m sure glad I don’t have to be out in it.
On the flip side, my kids are home from school all day. Again. They were also off all day yesterday, for Act 180 Day or whatever it is. I love my kids somethin’ fierce, but lordy. They need to be in school. They are at each other’s throats, and on my last nerve, by noon. I need a cocktail!
Or better yet, a hot toddy.
I have loved this one for years. Ever since I first started spending my St. Paddy’s days at that pub I was telling you about in my last post. It’s perfect because it’s creamy and comforting, a little sweet and cinnamon-y, with a boozy kick from real Irish whiskey plus a bit of a caffeine buzz. Everything you could ever want in a winter drink and then some.
It starts with soft butter, mashed together with brown sugar and some freshly grated nutmeg. If you don’t have whole nutmeg on hand, you can certainly use a pinch of the pre-ground stuff, but once you’ve tried grating it yourself I promise you will never go back. The flavor is amazing and it’s so easy to just scratch it in with a microplane grater.
Next comes a shot of Irish whiskey, and then you pour over some steaming hot water and steep some tea. My favorite tea blend, around St. Patrick’s day and always, is Irish breakfast. It has such a deep, rich flavor. I can’t not have coffee in the morning, but when I need an afternoon pick-me-up, I’m all about the Irish breakfast tea.
Top it with whipped cream, a few more scratches of nutmeg, and a cinnamon stick, and you are in heaven.
It doesn’t get much better than a mug of hot buttered Jamie between your palms and a beautiful snowy scene outside your window! Unless of course your kids are playing at a friend’s house. 😛

Oh my gosh! Look at all that snow! At least you have this awesome drink to keep you warm! Great St. Patty’s drink!
I know, right Kathleen? Just when I thought Spring was around the corner, we ended up getting slammed! Oh well, it sure was pretty and the good news is- it’s almost all melted already. And the drink definitely softened the blow! Thanks so much for the sweet comment Kathleen! Hope you had safe travels on your fabulous European vacation!
The view from your window looks beautiful Allie, but I’m so done with snow for this year 🙂 Hope it is starting to warm up this week, so there are no more snow days for the kids! This hot buttered Jamie looks so good! Perfect for a snowy day! And pictures are awesome!
I’m hoping those were the last snow days of the year, lol! I don’t mind a snow day here or there, but when they back up to a teacher in-service day AND a weekend, things get a bit squirrelly around here! Thank goodness it is finally warming up and I think the snow will all be gone by week’s end. Thank you so much for the sweet compliments Mira! I hope you’re having a great week dear!
This sounds so comforting and delicious! 😀 Lovely warming recipe perfect for chilly days! x
Thank you so much Jess! That is just what I thought too 😉
It really does look like Currier and Ives out your window. 🙂 I’ve always loved hot buttered rum, but I think I’d like this even more – like a boozy chai. Love love this, Allie.
Thanks Marissa! It really is like a boozy chai! You are so right 😉
This is the perfect winter drink!
Thanks Julianne! It’s definitely a favorite of mine 😉
Holy cow. This is SO up my alley! Love it. And this winter = boy am I glad I get to work from home. It’s been so terrible here. I feel awful for folks that have to drive in this stuff. I want to just stay in all day and cozy up with this drink!
Haha, same here Liz! So happy you liked this- thanks for the sweet comment and stay warm hon!
Beautiful photos! This sounds so good and warming. I’ve never thought to mix Irish whiskey with strongly brewed black tea, but I bet it’s delicious! Here in Houston we’re not really experiencing hot toddy weather at the moment, but I’m saving this recipe.
Haha well I’d send some of this frigid northeastern weather your way if you’d like to make a trade! Thanks so much Lindsey; I’m so happy you enjoyed! 🙂
Allie, this hot buttered jamie looks soooooooo good!!! I’m with you on needing a cocktail when the kids are home! Drink one for me too! 😛 and love the view from your window. . so beautiful!
Thanks Alice! xoxo
Your house seriously looks like a winter wonderland! I’ve never had one of these before and definitely need to try it! It looks insanely delicious 🙂
Thanks Michelle! It really is perfect for this kind of weather. Just makes you feel all warm and happy inside! Have a great week my dear!
Oooh, thanks for this one, Allie. This is a new one for me … but so so delicious-sounding for a winter’s night (or day!)
I am also VERY jealous of that beautiful view of yours today. I would feel very inspired indeed if I was working from home with that window to look out of!
It’s inspiring me to stay inside, lol! Thank you so much Helen- hope your week is off to a great start my friend! xoxo
This looks so good! Perfect for this weather we’ve all been having. I love the idea of getting cozy by a fire with one of these!
Right?? It’s so perfect for that. Hope you are keeping warm Brittaney! Thanks so much for stopping by and for the sweet comment! 🙂
It’s been snowing here nonstop too and all I want to do is curl up with a big mug of this hot toddy! It looks so cozy and amazing!
Haha thank you Kelly! I hope you are keeping warm sweetie! Have a great week xoxo
You definitely deserve a hot toddy after all of that! This is RIGHT up my alley, Allie. 😉 Pinning for later!
Thanks Justine! They are finally back to school this morning after 5 straight days of fighting and carrying on. The silence is golden! Lol… thanks so much for pinning hon!
If that picture was my reality I would be making this hot buttered whiskey drink REPEATEDLY! I hate to share that in the far northern part of the Pacific NW I ate a grilled cheese and tomato sandwich on my patio
in my work clothes—-a blouse and skirt. Then I mowed the lawn and worked in my garden. Hang in there.
Gah you are killing me Carol! I might have to crash your patio. 😉 Enjoy!
I’ve never heard of hot buttered jamie before but clearly I am lacking in my irish!! This just sounds amazing and the perfect way to cozy up. I’m trying it this weekend … without the whiskey though :p
I think it would be every bit as good without the whiskey 😛 Enjoy sweetie! xoxo
You are such a talented photographer, Allie! The picture of the winter wonderland is beautiful. And the hot buttered jamie is the perfect way to warm up on such a cold day. It sounds so yum!
Aw, you are too sweet Jen! So glad you like this; thank you for the sweet compliments. You made my day!
That snow sure is beautiful and if I lived there I’d be warming up with lot of these hot buttered Jamies, it looks delicious.
Thank you so much Janette! It is really pretty but boy is it causing a lot of frustration around here, lol! Hope your week is off to a great start sweetie!
It looks like a winter wonderland outside and with the kids being home, you will definitely need one of these. I love the twist on this though. Beautiful as always!
Thank you so much my friend! Hope your tummy is feeling better today 🙂
This drink looks so perfect for the weather you’re experiencing. I don’t drink alcohol, so I’m not familiar with a lot of alcoholic drinks, but I’m intrigued that there’s butter in there! Next snow storm (which I’m sure will be here any day) I’m going to try a virgin version of this. And, I hear you about the kids being at home.I love ’em, but there’s only so much inside, together time you can have and still stay sane. My kids have missed 6 days of school this year!
Oh man, I feel you Aida! I think my kids have probably missed more than that. Our school district is ridiculous. And I hate when they put a snow day right next to a teacher in service day or something like that. And then it butts up to a weekend- it’s like UGH! The kids get such cabin fever. Anyhow- I think this drink would be every bit as delicious without the whiskey- and the butter makes it so special! I hope you enjoy; and hang in there girl!
This is awesome! I totally here you on the snow days. At first it’s all good and then suddenly it goes downhill quickly. It somehow loses it’s charm in the late afternoon.
Have a great weekend friend!
This looks really warm and comforting. Looks like we have about the same amount of snow here! bleh. My kids are only 3 and 5 so they are home all day as they are not in school. But my husband is a teacher and has had 7 snow days this year (and last year was worse!!) And having him home is worse than the kids…..in theory it should be easier having home…in reality, it’s like, hmmm, hope there’s work tomorrow.
Oh my gosh really?? That is hysterical! I like it when my hubby stays home because I can tell the kids to go bother him instead 😛 That is too funny! Well I hope things warm up soon- for both our sake!
Yes! Although my older son can’t even get through the morning most times. He gets the worst cabin fever! Hang in there Melanie! Spring is just around the corner 😉
