What is a mojito?

This fabulous drink hails from Cuba, where rum reigns supreme!

It’s easy to make with just a few simple ingredients, and the taste is so fresh!

We make it with lime juice, sugar, and fresh mint leaves, spike it with rum, and top it all off with plenty of ice and fizzy water.

It’ll cool you right down!

Why this is the best mojito recipe

  1. Tastes amazing: The flavors are so fresh!
  2. Few ingredients: Just a few basics that can easily be found in a regular grocery store.
  3. Easy to make: Whip one up in around 5 minutes, maybe less!
  4. Versatile: Make them one at a time, or do a whole pitcher at once. You can even jazz them up with different fruits, herbs, or infused rum flavors.

What do mojitos taste like?

The predominant flavor here is mint, but there’s also a tangy brightness from the fresh lime.

You’ll also notice a faint warmth from the rum, and lots of refreshing fizz!

Ingredients

Ingredients for making mojitos, with text labels.

Mint: I like peppermint best, but you can use any kind of mint, as long as it’s fresh!

Sugar: Granulated sugar is traditional. A raw sugar, aka: turbinado would also work well.

Rum: White rum or silver rum would be best, since this drink is meant to be clear.

Lime: Squeeze fresh limes for the ultimate flavor!

Ice: You wouldn’t want to drink a warm mojito.

Sparkling water: This ingredients supplies the fizz.

See! I told you it was easy!

How to serve mojitos

These cocktails are best served freshly made and icy cold!

You can make them to order, or do up a bigger batch in a pitcher (more on that below).

If you’re looking for some nibbles to go along with, I’d suggest zucchini fritters, hoagie dip, hummus and pita, or guacamole and chips!

Expert tips

Make a pitcher: If you want to serve a larger crowd, mix up the mint, sugar, rum and lime juice, and keep it in a pitcher separate from the ice and sparkling water. This way your guests won’t have to worry about it getting warm or diluted or flat. They can pour the mixture over ice and top it off with seltzer as they need it.

Think about other flavors: A watermelon mojito would be amazing, as would a strawberry mojito or a blueberry mojito or a coconut mojito! You can infuse these flavors into your drink by adding fresh or frozen fruit, by using a flavored rum, or a flavored sparkling water! Easy-peasy!

Frequently asked questions

How can I make a frozen mojito slushie?

For this type of drink, I’d recommend muddling the mint and sugar, then adding lime juice.

Pour this mixture into ice cube trays and freeze it solid.

When you’re ready to enjoy a frozen mojito slush, just blend it up in the blender with rum, then pour it into glasses and top with sparkling water.

How to make a virgin mojito?

Just leave the rum out, if that’s your preference!

Can you make mojitos ahead of time?

Yes, and having a big pitcher-full is a great way for your guests to serve themselves.

Do everything but adding the ice and fizz.

Keep the mint, sugar, rum, and lime mixture out on the bar next to a bucket of ice and several cans of sparkling water. Guests can pour into their glasses from the pitcher, then add ice and bubbles.

How long does a mojito last?

This drink is best enjoyed when it’s freshly made and ice cold. I’d say you want to make it no more than an hour or so before you plan to drink it, unless you’re using the pitcher method noted above.

What is the serving size?

One mojito is equal to one serving. The nutritional info below is for one drink. It does not include any additional add-ins, other than what is listed in the ingredients section.
