What is honey butter?
This is a sweet and savory spread that will tingle your tastebuds! It’s made from just 3 simple ingredients and you won’t believe how something so basic can taste so incredible!
Why this is the best honey butter recipe
- Tastes amazing: The combination of sweet and salty will blow you away!
- Few ingredients: Only 3, to be exact.
- Easy to make: Takes 5 minutes.
- Versatile: Can be used to enhance everything from yeast breads to muffins to pancakes!
Ingredients

Butter: Unsalted butter allows you to judge just how much salt should be added to get the best taste. It’s best if you allow the butter to come up to room temperature, so it’s softer. Click here for some good tips: How to Soften Butter Quickly.
Salt: Salt carries all the flavors and intensifies them. I like kosher salt best because it’s cheap, easy to find, and doesn’t contain any bitter-tasting additives like iodine.
Honey: Any kind of honey will work here. A basic grocery-store variety such as orange blossom honey, clover honey or wildflower honey is great, or you can get fancy with acacia honey, eucalyptus honey, lavender honey, or something similar.
Special equipment
- Measuring cups and spoons: Follow my guide on how to measure ingredients.
- Bowl: In which to whip up the honey butter.
- Mixer: Either a handheld electric mixer or a stand mixer fitted with the whip attachment.
- Silicone spatula: For scraping down the bowl and getting every last bit out!
How to make honey butter
This easy recipe comes together in 2 simple steps.
Step 1: Whip the butter and salt
Place the softened butter in the bowl along with the salt.

Whip these 2 ingredients together until fluffy.
Step 2: Add honey
Next just pour in the honey.
You’ll probably want to scrape down the bottom and sides of the bowl with your silicone spatula just to make sure everything gets incorporated.
How to serve honey butter
Spread this compound butter on everything from soft dinner rolls or homemade crescent rolls to crusty breads like my French baguette or ciabatta.
It’s best enjoyed at room temperature, but you can stash it in the fridge to extend its shelf life (more on that below).

Expert tips
Soften the butter: Your butter will whip much better if it’s been softened to room temperature first. Use any of the brilliant tips found here: How to Soften Butter Quickly.
Taste for seasoning: You can adjust the amount of salt to perfectly suit your preference. Start with a small amount and taste as you go until you hit that perfect balance.
Frequently asked questions
You certainly can! And it’s so nice to have a little pot hanging around for whatever you might want to spread it on.
This should keep at room temperature for a few days, in the fridge for a few months, or in the freezer for about 6 months.
Compound butters like this one freeze very well. Thaw it in the fridge or at room temperature.
